When practicing yoga you want to be sure to wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. You will be stretching and don’t want your clothing to restrict your movement. You shouldn’t wear “dress” clothing, jeans or anything that doesn’t stretch.

Things to keep in mind when choosing your clothing for yoga practice:

Comfort is the number one key to choosing the appropriate clothing. Yoga is a form of meditation and we all know how hard it is to concentrate when our jeans are pinching into our belling button. Wearing tight form fitting clothing can restrict the body’s blow flow as well. Make sure that the length of your clothing will cover your body if you practice in a class; you don’t want your mat neighbors getting flashed in the middle of one of your stretches either! Having loose fitting clothing also helps with sweat absorption.

Ideas for women’s wear:

Try a pair of supplex/ cotton blend capris. They have elastic waistbands for comfort and fit to your calves so that the legs do not move while exercising. Match your capris with a supplex yoga bra. This outfit is ideal attire for practicing yoga in. The supplex material allows your body to sweat freely and cool down with ease. It also does not inhibit flexibility. If you are just starting out and not ready to invest a lot of money in specialty clothing, any sports bra and elastic loose jogging pants will work just fine. If you’re not comfortable in just a sports bra, simply cover up with an over sized T-shirt to tank top.

Ideas for men’s wear:

Any pair of elastic loose fitting shorts will work for men practicing yoga. They do make yoga shorts for men out of Lycra for a comfortable fit and easy breathing while exercising. Loose fitting tank tops are ideal tops to wear because of their full flexibility of the arms and shoulders.

Many beginners of yoga, both men and women, have found that drawstring “nursing” pants are wonderful for exercising in. They are very inexpensive and offer the comfort and flexibility needed for stretching.

Whatever you decide to wear, make sure it’s comfortable and appropriate for class if you are in one, and your yoga experience will be one of ease and relaxation!
